Dueling Petitions and Lese Majeste Accusations
At least five million Thais signed their names in resistance to the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship’s drive to petition for a royal pardon for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, according to Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat. He added that the Interior Ministry would continue to accept people’s signatures for the time being, but, the names won’t be submitted at the same time as the UDD submits its original petition because the ministry only wanted to let the people see how big the opposition was to granting a pardon to Thaksin.
Mr Boonjong also said that he was not troubled by a grievance filed to police by the opposition Puea Thai party condemning him, Interior Minister Chavarat Charnveerakul as well as interior secretary Wichai Srikhwan of the crime of lese majeste.
The complaint, filed by Puea Thai spokesperson Prompong Nopparit, alleges that the three had breached the Criminal Code by demanding neighborhood officials all over the country to set up stations to compel people against their will to sign their names in opposition to the Thaksin pardon petition.
