Vietnam and Laos Reject Asean Call to Release Aung San Suu Kyi
Thailand, currently acting as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has recommended that other Asean member nations request the Burmese regime to pardon to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Vietnam and Laos have voiced opposition to the move, declaring that Asean should not interfere in the affairs of Burma.
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said that Thailand has written to the other Asean constituents seeking a consensus to insist that the Burmese government consider pardoning Mrs Suu Kyi.
Thailand has also sent a copy of the correspondence to Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win, according to Mr Kasit, who was working in Malaysia for the Thai-Malaysian Joint Commission.
Mr Kasit said, “We are waiting for a reply from other Asean members,”
The Burmese court has sentenced Mrs Suu Kyi to a further 18 months of house arrest for violation of her house arrest rules, after an uninvited American man swam a small lake to stay at her home for two days back in May.
