Highway Safety Goals Announced by Prime Minister
The Thai government has finally started taking steps to reduce highway accidents. Road mishap deterrence has been put on the country’s agenda with the aim of reducing the yearly death toll to half the current rate within ten years, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced on Thursday.
Mr Abhisit was speaking before a colloquium of the Network for Road Safety being held in Bangkok this morning.
Abhisit said that more than 12,000 people were killed in highway accidents last year, making an average of 33 road deaths per day.
These high numbers of Traffic mishaps were costing the nation several hundred billion baht due to economic losses every year.
To accomplish the objective, the government has set up a new center for highway safety and was charged with road accident deterrence throughout the kingdom.
