Thai King Allows His Name to be Attached to New Flower
His Majesty the King of Thailand has permitted a Dutch tulip grower to make use of his name, “King Bhumibol”, for a new species of tulip.
According to a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Wimol Kidchob the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary notified the ministry that the King had granted permission to Klaas Koedijk, a Dutch grower and owner of FA.P. Koeddiik & Zn company, to use the name for the new tulip.
Mr Koedijk had requested for His Majesty’s authorization to name the tulip after him as a result of the feeling he was left with from the commemorations of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s attainment of the throne in 2006, when the Thai people came together to show their loyalty and appreciation.
Mr Koedijk moreover senses closeness to Thailand because his son, a one time volunteer computer teacher in the North, is married to a Thai woman.
