Cloud Seeding Underway in Central Thailand
Thailand’s government has turned to Cloud-seeding operations to help fill the Thap Salao dam in the Udon Thani area which is currently running low on water.
Arkhanay Boonlert, head of the artificial rain-making centre for the central region, stated that the reservoir’s water was down about 21% from its capacity of 160 million cubic meters in spite of the fact that the Huay Kha Khaeng forest reserve is located to the north of the dam.
Mr Arkhanay said that the reservoir’s water level had never been so shallow before was of serious concern since the water is necessary for food production.
In order to alleviate the problem, the office is working to produce rain artificially by seeding clouds to hopefully raise the dam’s water volume by up to 70% to create sufficient water supplies in the coming dry season around the region.
Water volumes in other major reservoirs in the central region such as the Krasieo reservoir in Suphan Buri and the Pasak Jolasit dam in Lop Buri are not of concern at the current time.
