Teenage Refugees from Burma Die in Thailand
Two teenage Rohingya refugees from Burma held in the Ranong detention center for seven months have died after they starved themselves to death since becoming dispirited and refusing to eat. The two teens Abdul Salam, 18, and Hammatula, 15, bodies were covered in wounds, after apparently being tortured by the Burmese army during their boat trip fleeing Burma, according to a doctor at the refugee center. The doctors had treated the teenagers’ wounds, but the two were overwhelmed by a sense of depression, despair and hopelessness. The official reason given for the two teenagers’ deaths is “natural causes” by cardiac arrest.
Rohingya refugees are a Moslem minority from Burma where they face discrimination and oppression.
“Their minds were just so sick that they lost enthusiasm for everything,” according to a doctor quoted in local media, “They refused to take food and they refused to move around. They told me that they were desperate and didn’t know what to do with their lives any more. They told me that it’s better to kill them than to detain them like this.”
Refugees from Burma are a constant problem for Thailand.
