Club Owner Burns Victims Again
The owner of the former Santika pubinclub in Bangkok, which burst into an inferno on New Year’s Eve, has told a court he could pay only 30,000 baht in recompense to families of the dead and to surviving victims.
The conflagration killed 66 people and harmed hundreds. The bid was part of a second round of court resolution talks between the pub owner and operator Suriya Ritrabue and the victims and their families at Phra Khanong Provincial Court Wednesday.
A legal representative of Mr Suriya told victims that the club owner had no more money to pay damages.
Seven civil suits have been filed against Mr Suriya by families affected by the Santika fire demanding compensation totaling more than 105million baht.
The lawyer said the club owner could not afford to forfeit more than his current offer, but a fire victim who spoke anonymously said the management as well as the business partners of the pub should also share some responsibility.
