Thai Woman Sentenced to 18 Years for Speeches
The Thai Criminal Court Friday sentenced Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, also known as Da Torpedo, to 18 years in prison without parole for offensive statements directed toward the monarchy. The charge is lese majeste which is punishable in Thailand.
The trial court said that three undercover law enforcement officers from Chana Songkhram police station attended the rallies and recorded Ms. Daranee’s speeches, which they deemed insulting to the monarchy, as evidence against her.
In court, during the trial, Daranee asserted she could not recall many details of her speeches or when she made them, she was unable to prove that she had not made the lese majeste speeches as the police charged.
