Abhisit Announces Land Plan
Thailand’s community land ownership system is expected to be approved by the cabinet within two weeks, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has stated.
During his weekly broadcast address yesterday, the Prime Minister announced that agencies had finished drafting the community land ownership regulations and they would be presented for cabinet authorization in mid-September.
The Democrats’ flagship land policy calls for communities to now have the right to own state land now being unused. The plan would benefit more than 1.5 million farmer families, according to Mr Abhisit. “I am confident that the scheme will help needy farmers to occupy land plots to grow crops,” he stated. “They will be allowed to use the land under regulations set by the community.”
Mr Abhisit plans to visit a pilot project in Pathum Thani this week, where unused farm land owned by state agencies would be distributed to landless farmers.
