Videos Showing Thai Police Extorting Tourists Called Conspiracy by Thai Police
Video recordings of foreign tourists allegedly being extorted over damage to jet skis on Phuket as well as other occurrences have been made to harm Thailand’s reputation for being friendly to tourism, according to authorities.
The creators of the video clips – shown repeatedly on British cable TV and YouTube – and the victims of the scams have denied the allegation.
Pol Lt Gen Santhan Chayanont, chief of Provincial Police Region 8 which covers the upper South, including Phuket, yesterday told reporters that attempts to taint Thailand’s image might be a coordinated conspiracy to portray Thai police as corrupt and willing to engage in extortion against tourists.
The video clips show a British marine as well as a US marine being threatened with jail unless they agree to pay excessive costs for damage to rented jet skis on Phuket in two separate occurrences.
The controversial scenes, in which Thai police are present, were put on air as part of the series entitled Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand on Britain’s Bravo cable TV station. They have also appeared on you tube since then.
