Pro-Democracy Politicians Targeted
Thailand’s anti-graft agency is planning to file criminal charges against former Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his former foreign minister, Noppadon Pattama for their approval of a joint communiqué with the Cambodian government in regard Preah Vihear temple, regarded by all accepted international bodies as being legally within the borders of Cambodia. Certain political factions in Thailand have become incensed about the temple’s being granted World Heritage Site status from the U.N., claiming suddenly that the temple is actually now in Thailand since Cambodians are unworthy of such an honor.
The National Anti-Corruption Commission voted 6-3 yesterday to file the charges against Mr Samak and Mr Noppadon who came to office through democratic elections. The Anti-Corruption members have been appointed by the current unelected government, which is supported by factions behind the 2006 coup as well as the forced closing of the Bangkok airports by anti-democratic yellow-shirted mobs.
“Mr Samak, as head of the government, must have been aware the issue was sensitive and could affect the country’s territory and lead to a social crisis,” NACC spokesman Klanarong Chantik said according to local media.
All internationally recognized border agreements place the temple in Cambodia making the current action appear to be nothing more than political pandering to anti-democratic factions by inflaming xenophobia and prosecuting a former Prime Minister who came to power democratically.
