Obama Announces Asia Tour for November
US President Barack Obama will tour Asia for the first time next month, visiting Japan, Singapore, China as well as South Korea for a bout of meetings on pressing matters such as trade and global security.
The upcoming trip will be Obama’s most testing venture up till now into the vital US relationship with Asia’s top powers where he will push for support on major foreign policy concerns.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said,” The president… will be traveling to Asia next month to strengthen our cooperation with this vital part of the world on a range of issues of mutual interest.”
Obama will arrive first in Japan, and then be present at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) summit to be held in Singapore.
He will hold the first talks between a US leader and all 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders — which may incorporate an unprecedented encounter with Burma’s military leaders.
Obama will then visit Beijing and Shanghai with his last stop in South Korea.
