Red Shirts Serve Fish to Visiting Minister
Red-shirt supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin hurled plastic bags containing pla ra, a fermented fish dish known for its strong odor, at Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai when he visited Khon Kaen’s Chum Phae area Friday afternoon.
Mr Issara was touring the northeastern locality to follow up on the ministry’s “Baan Mankong” (Stable Home) scheme under the government’s Thai Khem Kaeng (Strong Thailand) trade and industry stimulus scheme.
Over 100 police officers had been deployed to safeguard the minister.
Hordes of red-shirts demonstrated against the minister and threw the bags of smelly fish at him while he was handing out home owner certificates to neighboring villagers.
The smelly protest forced Mr Issara to hastily end the ceremony and other scheduled activities as his security escort returned him to his vehicle.
