U.S. Navy Visits Phuket
Phuket’s economy is booming thanks to a spate of visits by foreign naval vessels.
Visits by warships bring with them thousands of friendly sailors anxious to meet locals and have a good time.
Navy ships from the US, Australia, Britain, India and Russia have stopped in the past few years.
Recently, three warships from the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group stopped with more than 6,000 sailors who swarmed Patong beach in a frenzy of ecstasy-seeking and reveling in the sights.
During their six-day orgy of fun and excitement, it was conservatively estimated that the crew from the ships spent around 34 million baht.
The visiting sailors all took part in volunteer activities in Phuket and nearby areas badly hit by the tsunami in 2004.
These visits, though rare, add a great deal to the local economy and of course the bar girls of Patong beach speak of the fond memories of the gentlemen from afar who stop to help them boost the local economy. Anchors away lads!
