Trouble on the Tracks
Thai train operators unions organized work stoppages after asserting that many trains were faulty and that they feared another lethal derailment.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has stated that he had told Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum to ensure a quick recommencement of suspended train services.
State Railway of Thailand chief engineer Krit Salongchaithawat conceded that there may be an endeavor by the union to launch a countrywide strike. The SRT hope to talk the unionists into abandoning any plan for a nationwide interruption of sevice.
At the busy Hat Yai junction yesterday, 18 more train drivers and mechanics walked off, stopping at least eight trains including the important Sungai Kolok-Bangkok service.
The Unions complain that the equipment is unsafe, and staff are overworked. The driver in last week’s deadly derailment allegedly had one day off in 5 months.
