First Ever Positive Results of An AIDS Vaccine
Resulting data from an Aids vaccine trial conducted in Thailand was given to scientists on Tuesday for the first time, confirming the trial vaccine as only being partially effective against the HIV virus but still a step in the right direction.
Volunteer patients who received the vaccine had a 31.2-per cent lessening in acquiring infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Thai and US researchers reported a worldwide conference.
It is the first piece of actual good news ever in the pursuit of a vaccine against Aids, which has killed millions since first appearing thirty years ago.
The researchers warned that the rate of prevention must be increased to 50% in order to be considered effective. The trial was hailed as good news since it offers scientific validation that boosting the immune system to fight HIV is indeed possible.
Nelson Michael from the US Military HIV Research Program, who helped lead the trial, told AFP, “From a scientific standpoint, it’s definitely a breakthrough. But this is definitely not a public-health breakthrough.”
The study involved 16,395 Thai volunteers. Half were given a placebo and half the trial vaccine.
