“Merchant of Death” May Be Set Free in thailand
A higher-ranking Thai prosecutor rebuffed demands from Washington Thursday over its attempts to extradite Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, sometimes known as the “Merchant of Death”.
The Thai appeals court is considering moves by the Thai government in opposition to the criminal court’s ruling in August that Bout should not be shipped to the United States to face prosecution.
A US representative said Wednesday that US President Barack Obama will press Thailand to go ahead with the extradition during his Asia trip next month.
“Every country’s justice system is sovereign and no one can interfere or pressure the judges,”
“This case is under deliberation by the Court of Appeal… To extradite or not is up to the court,” said Sirisak Tiyapan, executive manager of global affairs at the Thai Attorney-General’s Office.
Bout’s is said to have been the inspiration for the Hollywood film “Lord of Death” and he is accused selling weapons to Al-Qaeda.
