Thailand’s Trains Travel on Troubled Tracks
Senior maintenance technicians on Thailand’s State owned rail system; some with more than 20 years’ experience declare that the system is afflicted by a dearth of appropriate extra parts. They said experienced mechanics were attempting to meet impracticable requirements to continue running dilapidated equipment in service.
The SRT has 209 locomotives to move all passenger and freight cars with three major providers of parts; General Electric, Alsthom and Hitachi. The engines have a brake structure connected to a driver alert system which utilizes what train drivers refer to as a dead man’s brake. This system forces a driver to push a button at least every two minutes or else the automatic emergency brake will stop the train to ensure safety.
This system failed to function in the Khao Tao accident where the driver was unconscious, causing the accident which killed seven riders and injured eighty eight.
