New Drug Task Force to Take Fight to Northern Provinces
The Thai government is creating a new drug control force linking civilians and law enforcement to boost the fight against drug smuggling near the border.
The new force would operate in perimeter provinces such as Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, which are main routes for drugs smuggled into Thailand from Burma, and would be oversee by the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc).
Actions will be taken soon in concert with the 3rd Army and police and civic groups, the front-line defense against drug gangs in the northern border regions.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban told reporters that he hoped it would help to cut the flow of drugs into Thailand especially after the Burmese government has stepped up pressure on armed ethnic groups inside Burma which are accused of producing illicit drugs.
Mr Suthep stated that some minority rebel factions were making money from shipping drugs to Thailand.
