To Puea Thai or Not to Puea Thai
Thaksin ShinawatraThe, the former Prime Minister of Thailand who was removed from office by a coup three years ago leading to chaos in Thai Society has been assembling supporters among TV and film stars to run as candidates for the Puea Thai Party in the next election. No election had been scheduled.
Many ask why Puea Thai, not the Democrats or even the Bhumjaithai Party? Several actors-turned-politicians have claimed in unison. “This is the party that belongs to the multitude of people in this country who happen to be our major fans.”
Prompong Nopparit, formerly a well known actor who is now acting spokesman for the party, said actors should be seen as public figures, and just like politicians, they are sometimes admired, abhorred, and adored by the public. According to Mr Prompong, well known actors already receive an income from their work and can be trusted with positions of power because they don’t need money.
He is quoted as saying, “Good actors not only never forget their lines, but they never ignore people’s demands and dreams. Good actors must know what the people like and what the people dislike, at the very least.”
