Rumored Rumor Mongers Rumored to Have Spread Rumors
Thiranant Wipuchanin, 43, was arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday by Thai police after returning from a trip to Austria.
She has been charged with a violation of Article 14 of the 2007 Computer Offense Act, which makes it illegal to post false information which causes harm to national security or alarms the public.
Alleged rumors about the state of His Majesty the King’s health was thought to be the cause of the stock market plunge of 7% during the trading days of Oct 14 and 15.
Ms Thiranant, the former executive director of UBS Securities (Thailand) who left the company last year, told police she merely translated postings from a overseas news website and posted it to a Thai website.
Stock market prices fell sharply on that day and she thought readers might possibly have wanted to know why. Ms Thiranant claimed she had no intention to harm stock prices.
Police are actively seeking another alleged rumor monger who is reported to be anurse.
