Thailand’s Trains to Travel Faster
Thailand’s Council of Economic Ministers has approved a plan to improve the rail system to the tune of about 100 billion baht as has been proposed by the Transport Ministry, according to Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu.
The plan gives outlines for improvement of railway tracks all over the nation, purchasing new locomotives and train cars as well as hiring more workers.
The arrangement will be carried out in three phases.
Phase 1, from 2010-2014, entails upgrading of the existing tracks and acquiring of more locomotives and cars at a cost of about 46 billion baht, as well as 767 kilometers of double-track at the cost of 66 billion baht.
Phase 2 includes expansion of the entire system including improved connection to neighboring countries.
Phase 3 would be construction of 4 high-speed train lines, starting with the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route.
Mr Korbsak did not give a timetable for stages 2 and 3.
