Tobacco Sellers Harassed by Activists
Hundreds of anti-smoking activists are protesting outside Tabinfo Asia 2009 at Impact Arena, in Bangkok.
The tobacco industry exposition in has drawn 3,000 participants from around the globe. It has also drawn widespread denunciation for its promotion of smoking throughout Asia.
Around 650 people on behalf of students, professionals, academics and non-governmental organizations assembled outside the exhibition in objection to its being held in Thailand.
“Tabinfo Asia 2009 is a signal for the international community to understand that the tobacco industry will not stop brainstorming new strategies to lure new smokers, particularly youths and women,” according to Prakit Vathesatogkit, executive secretary of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation (ASH Thailand).
Dr Prakit had praise for Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Phataraprasit for refusing to attend the opening, and replacing the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly’s exhibit with tourism advertising for the Unseen Thailand campaign.
