Red Shirts Rally to Demand Elections
Thailand’s Red-Shirted United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) will rally from Nov 28 to Dec 2, UDD core leader Natthawut Saikua said on Thursday. The UDD is demanding an election.
Mr Natthawut said red-shirts would gather at the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnern road from about midday starting Nov 28, and would stay overnight.
On Nov 29, UDD supporters plan to regroup at Misakawan intersection and stay overnight. On Nov 30, the red-shirts will rally against the government on various key roads in Bangkok and then regroup at the intersection.
Mr Natthawut said the red-shirts will peacefully disperse in the early morning of Dec 2. The demonstrations would behave peaceful and be unarmed.
The current unelected government which came to power after the forced closing of Bangkok’s International Airports by pro-military-coup groups has no plans to call elections and continues refusing to do so as long as a large majority of the Thai population supports ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was removed by a military coup after being reelected to a second term by a 74% majority.
Thaksin is currently exiled from Thailand and wanted on corruption charges.
Thailand has been in a state of chaos since the coup with tourists avoiding travel there.
