Internal Security Act to be Enforced in Chiang Mai
Thai internal security authorities are being asked to implement the Internal Security Act in Chiang Mai because of apprehensions about death threats allegedly made by red shirts against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, a government source says.
The act has been imposed in Bangkok in the Bang Khun Phrom area in Phra Nakhon district, Sommanat area in Pomprap Sattruphai area as well as locations at the Royal Plaza and Ratchadamnoen Avenue from Saturday to Dec 14.
If it is enforced in Chiang Mai, the act would be enacted for areas near the Le Meridien Hotel where the Thai chambers of commerce members from across the nation will be holding their annual meeting from Friday to Sunday.
Death threats allegedly made against Mr Abhisit by Pro-Thaksin community radio stations in the northern province make it necessary to include Chiang Mai in the order, the source said.
The decision to enact security measures will go up before the cabinet for approval today.
