Song and Dance Performance Leads to Nullified Election
The Supreme of Court of Thailand’s Election Division Thursday called for a new election in Constituency 1 of Maha Sarakham region as recommended by the Election Commission.
The EC suggested the new election after finding that Khachit Chainikhom, a Puea Thai Party candidate in the Jan 11 by-election in Maha Sarakham’s Constituency 1, had been in violation the Election Act.
Mr Khachit had won the election and his election was approved by the EC. However, a Puea Pandin candidate filed a complaint with the EC, accusing Mr Khachit of violating the election law.
According to the complaint, on Jan 2 Mr Kachit appeared on the stage at a northeastern-style singing and music show, which is regarded as a form of entertainment. While on the stage, Mr Khachit’s standing for election was announced to local constituents by Suthin Klangsaeng, a former director of the dissolved People Power Party.
The EC decided that Mr Khachit had violated Article 53 of the Election Act which forbids the use of any form of entertainment for campaigning. Anew election had been called. No date has been set.
