Former Thai Governor of Tourism Indicted in U.S.
US prosecutors have issued an indictment for a former governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and her daughter on charges that they received kickbacks from a Los Angeles filmmaking couple to run Bangkok International Film Festival and other schemes between 2002 and 2007.
US prosecutors say that prior TAT governor Juthamas Siriwan and her daughter Jittisopa were charged on Tuesday with conspiracy and eight other counts. If convicted of the charges, they each face up to 20 years in prison.
According to the prosecutors, the two defendants received about $1.8 million in payoffs from American film producers Gerald and Patricia Green from 2002 to 2007 so the Greens would be able to run the Bangkok film festival and take part in other tourism-related transactions.
The plot netted the couple, who exaggerated their budgets so Mrs Juthamas could be bribed, about $13.5 million, according to authorities.
Gerald and Patricia Green moved a total of US$1.8 million to Mrs Juthamas. The disbursements, some of which were made in cash directly to Mrs Juthamas, were often camouflaged as sales commissions of around 10% to 20%.
Mrs Juthamas and her daughter also created bank accounts in Singapore and the United Kingdom to take delivery of the payments, they said.
The Greens were convicted by a US court of conspiracy and money laundering last year. They are expected to be sentenced on Thursday.
