Slugfest in Japan
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam a Thai boxer is ready to establish himself as a real champion after verifying that he will have a championship bout in Japan.
The 32-year-old Pongsaklek’s extended wait for a title match for the WBC flyweight belt finally looks to be over as he is listed to meet champion Koki Kameda sometime in the next few months.
“Everything is sorted out except for the time and place,” promoter Piyarat Wachirarattanawongse announced, after settling a deal with Koki’s managers in Japan.
“It is likely to take place either in late March or early April,” he said.
The Thai boxer, who is now the “interim” champ in the 112-pound division, is trying to recover the belt he lost to Daisuke Naito back in July of 2007.
However, Koki has since dethroned Naito in November so it appears Pongsaklek is now facing a greater challenge.
The 23-year-old Koki has a lossless record of 22 wins with 14 knockouts while the experienced Thai boxer has endured three losses to 74 wins with one draw.
