Cambodian-Thai Border Skirmish
Cambodian and Thai armed forces traded weapons fire early Sunday about 20 kilometers from an ancient temple site on Cambodia’s northern border with Thailand, a Defence Ministry spokesman has reported.
General Chhum Socheat told a German Press Agency that the conflict came about on the morning that Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong was paying a visit to the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple.
Chhum Socheat told media that Thai soldiers had crossed 200 meters into Cambodia near an abandoned village 20 kilometers from the temple when they came upon Cambodian soldiers.
“When they saw our soldiers they shot at them, and after (our soldiers) shot back there was no more fighting,” he alleged, including that the Thai troops then withdrew.
Chhum Socheat said not any of the Cambodian soldiers were harmed or killed, but he had no information on whether Thai troops had experienced casualties.
He said he did not anticipate further fighting since superior officers on both sides had since spoken to the other.
“Now it’s quiet, they solved the problem by telephone,” he said.
