Govt. in Exile Fears Downplayed
The Thai government has downplayed claims by ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that he is in preparations to create a government-in-exile.
The government also dismissed rumors that the anti-government red shirts plan to propagate political disorder ahead of a key court decision.
The UDD (United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship) is trying to increase pressure on the government ahead of Feb 26, when the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions is scheduled to convey its verdict on if the state should seize 76 billion baht in frozen assets allegedly belonging to Thaksin. UDD supporters ended their rally at a Khao Soi Dao golf course and resort in Chanthaburi yesterday.
The UDD also says it is setting up to rally at the army center of operations to ask the armed forces if they plan to stage a coup.Thaksin’s supporters also plan to issue papers which they claim explain how he acquired his property.
Speaking by means of video link to a red-shirt protest rally at the Khao Soi Dao golf course and resort center in Chanthaburi, where UDD members gathered during the weekend, Mr Thaksin on Saturday said he would be setting up a government-in-exile soon. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday downplayed the idea such a plan.
The current unelected government has no plans to call democratic elections any time soon.
