Divining Rod Device Still in Use in Southern Thailand
The GT200 bomb detector which is nothing but a divining rod device that includes a handle, no power supply, a moving antenna like rod, and functionless cards similar to credit cards containing useless tiny electronic parts is currently still in use in southern Thailand after the Thai Army paid 900,000 baht apiece for them even though they contain absolutely no parts that could function in any way to detect the presence of explosive chemicals. The antenna like rod moves in a way that sometimes gives the appearance that it is moving by itself although this property of divining rod devices has long ago been shown to be a result of ideo-motor reflexes or tiny unconscious muscle actions by the person holding the device. The rod then appears to move in reaction to something hidden. The GT200 has no receptors capable of detecting any substance. It is just a handle, a moving metal rod and a card in a slot. The makers of the device claim it picks magnetic resonances of explosive materials.
Col Banpot Poonpian, chief of public relations of the office of the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) said that altogether 535 of the GT200 detectors have been in use in the southern border provinces since 2006.
535 GT 200s at 900,000 baht each is 481,500,000 baht or enough to build homes for one thousand Thai families.
No figures are available on preventable death and injuries although false negative readings of objects that later exploded have been reported. Divining rod explosives detectors have failed to detect 1000 pounds of explosives from 20 feet away in controlled tests.
