Charter Amendments Divide Coalition Partners
Time is running short for the coalition government as the association between the Democrats and their allies has gone from bad to worse, and a squad of armored personnel carriers appeared without warning on Bangkok streets, prompting conjecture of another coup in the making.
The gap between the Democrats and their partners grew as the prime minister’s party rebuffed their demands for constitutional revisions, but mutual interests kept the coalition government jointly, for now
The Democrats’ rebuff by a majority vote of their allies’ suggested charter changes, chiefly the one for a move from multi-MP constituencies to a single-seat constituency electoral scheme, clearly shows that the Democrats will not bend to their partners’ demands and could not care less if they choose to relinquish the coalition alliance or switch allegiance to other parties.
