Puea Party Demands Dubious MPs Depart Democrat Dominated Coalition
Thailand’s opposition Puea Thai Party called on the Democrats’ alliance partners to show their position on charter changes by extracting themselves from the government.
The ruling Democrat Party last week come to a decision not to join the five other coalition parties in their bid to modify two main points of the 2007 constitution. They want to modify the voting system from multi-seat to single-seat constituencies, and want to topple the condition that all international agreements must receive parliamentary sanction.
Puea Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit announced on Sunday said core associates of the coalition parties told their MPs and cabinet ministers to shun criticizing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Democrat Party, as they did not want to be an opponent and were afraid that a house disbanding could occur.
The opposition spokesperson recommended that the coalition allies make a clear choice by taking the interests of the kingdom and its people into consideration.
“If the coalition parties are sincere with the people and stick to its charter amendment stance, they should quit the coalition because Mr Abhisit and the Democrats have broken the promise,” Mr Prompong told those assembled.
He said officials must have their own principles and show a clear standpoint without adhering to their own personal benefit.
