Drug Scare in Bangkok School
Misuse of over-the-counter cough suppressants at a Bangkok school is raising apprehension about public education on drug use and the value of controls on drug sales by pharmacies.
About 80 students, most of them in Prathom 4 and 5 (Grade 4 and 5), at Wat Tha Phra school in Bangkok Yai district were taken hospitals yesterday after suffering drug intoxication indications such as nausea, irregular heartbeat and severe head pain.
They were discovered to have eaten vast quantities of small yellow pills that were identified later as cough control tablets containing dextromethorphan.
Twelve of the students sent to Taksin Hospital were in serious condition and had their stomachs pumped to remove the drug.
Most of the students were in a stable condition and were later sent home.
The students were led to believe that the tablets, which they purchased for one baht each, had a range of properties – from whitening the skin to making them smarter.
