Abhisit Announces Good News on Economy
The Thai government is looking forward to phasing out economic incentive measures sooner than anticipated, because there are now good indications of economic recovery, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced on Friday.
Mr Abhisit, speaking at the 2010 Expo prepared by Post Today, said government income was about 200 billion baht above anticipations, which meant thought could be given to easing off. Tourism had also increased, he said.
“These positive figures have prompted the government to reconsider the necessity to seek an 800 billion baht loan,” Mr Abhisit told those present.
For the reason that the economy had begun to improve, the government was now planning an exit plan, concerning phasing out stimulus measures. However, the government would not rush to do this before it was positive that economic recovery is steady and strong.
“We are looking forward to seeing the right time to end the stimulus measures. We will have to wait for a while to see what all the indicators are like. But there is a possibility the government will begin its exit plan sooner than expected. We have discussed this matter for some time,” the prime minister told reporters.
He asserted that the exit policy would be slowly adopted to avoid any major affects on the economy.
