A Million Red Shirt Rally, Ruse or Reality
It is claimed by the UDD that more than one million red-shirts will surely take part in a mass assembly aimed at bringing down the current government, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Jatuporn Promphan asserted on Tuesday.
Talking to reporters following a UDD meeting, Mr Jatuporn said the precise date of the rally had yet to be decided. It could be previous to or after the Feb 26 Supreme Court ruling on the seizure of 76 billion baht of renegade former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s riches.
He held that the anti-government group differed with Gen Panlop Pinmanee’s idea of creation of a “people’s army” because the government could take this as a pretext to again charge the red shirts with preparing for violence.
The red-shirts would stay firmly within the law and stick to the principle of non-violence, Mr Jatuporn said.
“If we were to toe the line of Gen Panlop Pinmanee and Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, the red-shirts would face catastrophe.
“Therefore, we are against that line. To us, Seh Daeng [Maj-Gen Khattiya] is only a united front associate, not the leader of the UDD,” he said.
UDD chairperson Veera Musikhapong reiterated that the red-shirts would hold fast to a peaceful struggle to topple the “amartayathipatai”, the rule of the unelected aristocrats and elite, and again return state power to the Thai people.
