Teachers Fed Up With Killings
Thailand’s Confederation of Teachers in the southern border provinces on Tuesday demanded that the government to increase security for teachers.
The request was made after Samrit Panthadet, 52, an instructor of Bango Yimeng School in Kapho area of Pattani, was shot dead and his body set aflame.
The homicide happened on Monday as the teacher was driving to his home in the Muang region of Yala. The assailants also stole his motorbike.
Boonsom Thongsriprai, chairperson of the association, said Mr Samrit was the 125th teacher in the three southern border prefectures to have died in assaults by Islamic insurgents. Many of the victims were also burned.
He alleged that the latest slaying would negatively influence the morale of other teachers.
