Funny Money Probe of Red Shirts
The Thai government is looking into stories of unexplained streams of cash from abroad amid misgivings that it could be used to inflame violence ahead of the Feb 26 judgment in the Thaksin assets case.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday said the government “has been given reports and we are checking them”.
Abhisit said the flow of money appeared to corroborate his earlier forecast that political activity this month would strengthen.
The Thai Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions is about to hand down its ruling on Feb 26 on whether to impound 76 billion baht in assets from Thaksin Shinawatra which the prosecution claims he accumulated unlawfully while prime minister from 2001 to 2006.
Mr Abhisit denied the tales of the fund movements were manufactured to destabilize the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship.
