Wanted Yakuza Figure Arrested in Thailand
A Japanese yakuza boss has been detained in Bangkok in for the killing of a rival mob member in Japan.
Thai Immigration police Chief Wuthi Liptapanlop said Anai Kenichi, 41, was the head of the Kato Rengo-kai group, a splinter group of the Sumiyoshi-kai, Japan’s second-largest crime organization which is thought to have 6,000 members.
Mr Kenichi and other gangsters allegedly shot dead Watanabe Nobuhiro, 34, a member of Japan’s third-largest criminal gang, the Inagawa, in the Kanagawa district last July.
He fled from Japan on a forged passport and has been staying in Thailand since last October, Pol Lt Gen Wuthi told reporters.
Mr Kenichi was captured by immigration police at Diamond Tower apartment building on Soi Silom 7 after Thai authorities synchronized with Japanese police.
Mr Kenichi has no Thai criminal record, but police believe he was aided by fellow gang members while in hiding in Bangkok.
