Muslims Murder Mother and 14 Year Old Daughter
A Thai mother and her teenage daughter have been murdered in Pattani in what police consider was an act of reprisal for the latest killings of several insurgent leaders by Thai security forces.
Rattana Daengprathet, 44, and her daughter, Chiraphan, 14, were shot by two gunmen yesterday as they rode a motorcycle home from shopping in Panare district.
Police stated that they believed the homicides were carried out to take revenge for the deaths of Islamic leaders when a Thai security force of about a hundred police raided a house in Ban Khlorae in tambon Baretai of Bacho district.
The maneuver came after officers accepted a report that insurgents were hiding in the home and contriving an attack during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The raid resulted in a gunfight that lasted about 30 minutes.
One insurgent suspect was killed following yesterday’s murders, and two additional suspects were arrested. A fourth suspect escaped. The dead man has been identified as Muhammadnawawi Maeyu, 34. He was an inhabitant of Bacho district and a former Muslim religious teacher.
