Government on Alert for Trouble
The Thai government is entirely competent when it comes to keeping peace and order prior to and following the court ruling on Thaksin Shinawatra’s assets on Feb 26, Deputy Prime Minister for security affairs Suthep Thaugsuban announced on Thursday.
The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will present its ruling on whether to seize 76.6 billion baht worth of assets from ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his relatives on Feb 26.
Thai Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul said strict safety measures had been put in place at all major tank farms, oil refineries, and natural gas separation and power stations.
“I have ordered those authorities responsible to ensure the safety of these plants. Natural gas should also not be transported during the night hours, to prevent tanker trucks being seized as happened during the April [2009] riots,” Mr Wannarat told reporters.
