Japanese Investors Deny Plans for Sneak Attack on Thai Environment
Certain Japanese investors have verified that they are still ready to increase speculation in Thailand but have asked the government to come up with a clear timeframe for determining the outcome of the Map Ta Phut impasse.
Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya yesterday requested Japanese investors to come to the ministry to clarify the Map Ta Phut toxic waste problem, which led to the legal case filed by local residents against eight state agencies.
The villagers blamed the government agencies for failing to act in accordance with with Section 67 of the national charter in approving the industrial projects.
In attendance at the ministry’s conference were Japanese ambassador to Thailand Kyoji Komaji, representatives from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Japan External Trade Organisation.
“I got a confirmation from Japan that its investors are still interested in investing in Thailand and are ready to expand investments but they would like to know the exact timeframe for tackling the Map Ta Phut case,” announced the minister.
The FM quoted the Japanese investors’ envoys as saying that they were prepared to conform to Thai laws and international standards on environmental safeguards.
