GT200 Fails Again, Soldiers Pay Dearly
Two soldiers have been wounded in a bomb explosion in the lower South after a GT200 scanner botched detecting the explosives.
The bomb exploded on a road leading to a market in Khok Pho district of Pattani Monday, wounding Cpl Sommai Homhuan, 27, and Sgt Chuchawat Matsi, 28, who were watching the market, said Pol Col Krissada Kaewchandi, the district police chief.
Thai Police investigating the incident said the bomb weighed about 5kg and was set off by mobile phone.
Half of the 12 soldiers at the market had previously patrolled the area while using a GT200 to detect bombs but had failed to find any sign of explosives, a police investigation determined.
The GT200 of course is only a dowsing rod type device and incapable of finding explosives. The Thai army purchased over 500 of the useless devices for about $30,000 apiece.
