Allegations of Extrajudicial Killings Resurface
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will create a commission to reexamine the extra-judicial assassinations of drug suspects during the Thaksin Shinawatra government’s war on drugs.
Mr Abhisit declared the formation of the panel yesterday after being queried in parliament by Chalerm Yubamrung, leader of the Puea Thai Party MPs.
Mr Chalerm said that when Mr Abhisit was the leader of the opposition bloc, he charged Thaksin with committing crimes against humanity by arranging the extra-judicial killings of more than 2,500 people suspected of participation in drug trafficking, during the war on drugs in 2003.
Mr Abhisit had wanted to bring the issue to the notice of worldwide human rights organizations, Mr Chalerm told the House. Since coming to government, however, Mr Abhisit had made no serious effort to pursue the matter.
Mr Chalerm said he wanted to know how much development a government inquiry into the claims was making.
An autonomous commission investigating the extra-judicial killings had concluded the Thaksin government had not ordered them. The panel was selected by former Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.
