Thaksin Says His Assets Should be Returned
Thailand’s Fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said in his website www.thaksinlive.com at 4am on Friday that all of his money and assets were resultant from years of working hard, not from corruption as charged.
Thaksin claims that he had more than 60 billion baht in assets in 1994 and these assets were made known to the people before taking office.
“No matter what the court ruling will be today, I will never forget the kindness and support that the people have given to me,” Thaksin added.
The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will announce its verdict today whether the state should confiscate 76.6 billion baht in frozen assets of Thaksin and his relations held by local banks.
Thaksin has been accused of selling his shares in Shin corp. and paying no taxes. He was also convicted for using his position to secure a land purchase for his wife. He has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006. The current unelected government has no plans for elections in Thailand’s future.
