Thaksin Loses 46.3 Billion Baht Ruled to Have Been Gained Illegally
The Thai Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on Friday seized 46.3 billion baht that ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his ex-wife Potjaman na Pombejra obtained from selling their shares in Shin Corporation to Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.
The court ruled that Thaksin had misused his power and become curiously richer while holding the post of prime minister and misused his authority to promote his own corporation, Shin Corp, before selling his shareholding to Temasek.
However, the court said it would be unwarranted to impound all of the 76 billion baht in frozen assets held in local banks, as asked for by the Office of the Attorney-General, because a fraction of it was obtaind before Thaksin became prime minister.
Immediately after the court’s verdict, Thaksin told his backers in a video link from Dubai that the decision was unfair, politically motivated and “an international joke”.
He called his followers to carry on to fighting for democracy.
