Hot, Dry, in Thailand During Hot Dry Season
Thailand’s dry period is anticipated to be harsher and last longer than normal this year, the chairman of the Foundation for National Disaster Warning System of Thailand (NDWST) Smith Dharmasaroja told reporters on Friday.
Mr Smith held that the effects would be felt all over the country. He attributed the water emergency to the momentous fall in the water level of Mekong River, the return of the El Nino weather occurrence and also to climate change.
“All provinces should allocate resources for storing more water during the dry season and seek ways to solve this problem in the long run, because the crisis will be more severe every year,” the former National Disaster Warning Centre director warned.
Farmers in the drought-hit northeastern regions such as Nong Khai were experiencing added difficulties as paddy rats, rice lice and caterpillars were devouring their crops.
