Mekong River Suffers
The Thai government is closely keeping an eye on the declining water levels in the Mekong River with China and is prepared to talk about this predicament with the Chinese government, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday.
China has built dams along the Mekong River which could be depriving the downstream stretches of the river of water.
Mr Abhisit said he had allocated the Foreign Ministry to sort out the matter with envoys from China soon.
“We’ll ask China to help manage the water flow along the river better so countries in Southeast Asia would not be affected,” he stated. “I believe China has no intention to cause any water shortage problems.”
Abhisit said this year’s dry period was expected to be more grave than the past few years.
