Rice Farmers Restive, but Will Resist Rallying with Red Shirts
Thailand’s distressed rice farmers will not take part in the intended mass rally of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) next week end, Ayutthaya farmers’ spokesperson Kwanchai Mahachuenjai said on Sunday.
The UDD has planned to stage a mass anti-government gathering from March 12 to 14 in Bangkok in an effort to bring down the Democrat-led government.
Mr Kwanchai said the low prices of rice had badly affected farmers and the government’s rice pledge scheme failed to help them as numerous rice mills did not have facilities to store rice.
He said that rice prices had fallen as much as 500 to 700 baht per ton from the value set by the government. The prices could possibly fall further to 6,000 baht a ton before long.
However, he said, the farmers would probably not join in with the red-shirt gathering and they may initiate mobilizing after March 14.
